Paint The Town
"It takes a village to paint the town!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A community-based art project created by Kurt Stoeckel & Martin Whitney
at the San Francisco deYoung Museumís Artist in Residence program, February, 2006.

We place Kurt's white paper one-line cutouts (original art, not copies) on tables,
supply watercolor brush pens, and invite people of all kinds & ages to
"PAINT THE TOWN!"

The only rule is to fill all the white space.

When the entire cutout is completely colored, the art is finished.

Each of the below photos shows art that the MUSEUM GUESTS
painted (with watercolor brush pens and Sharpie fine point black markers)
on my white paper one-line blade-cutouts. Each piece is LARGE...four feet
long (#1 & #2) and about six/seven feet tall for the portrait format piece (#3).

This was a wonderful interactive project,
and each of the pieces was painted by over ONE HUNDRED people!
Each piece by a DIFFERENT hundred people!

THINK ABOUT IT - If these three pieces hung (together) in a gallery
or a museum, most people would assume they were ALL THREE painted
by the same artist...eh?

QUESTION: Does the "Collective Consciousness" have a "style?"

Enjoy the tour!

Paint The Town - QUESTIONS...

Why are all the pieces (so far) 3-D with the Hologram Glasses?

The first four PTT pieces look like they could all have been painted
by the same ONE ARTIST, instead of each one being painted
by 100 different people. Will this continue with future pieces?

Will we be able to tell one group painting a piece from another group painting another piece?
Will we be able to tell CHILDREN-painted pieces from ADULT-painted pieces?

PTT - PICTURE THIS...

Tom Sawyer, white picket fence to paint, Tom enjoys painting it, other kids ask what
he is doing, Tom says how much fun it is, kids ask to join in, Tom says okay,
kids paint the fence and enjoy doing it, Tom retires to a management position.
